Our Wise Wood Tips
All our wood is sourced from permit-holding harvesters in Central NL, because we want our customers to have the highest quality, most sustainable wood on the market.
Here’s more tips to make sure you’re getting the most out of your wood.
Buying Your Firewood
- Ensure your wood junks/splits are at least 3″ shorter than the length of your woodstove or fireplace. Most of our wood is 14″ long, but we can do longer or shorter junks upon request.
- Ensure your wood is bought from an individual or company with a valid Timber Purchase License (ours is TPL#16-01-00161). Individuals with a Domestic Cutting Permit can only legally use that wood for their own home heating. This system helps ensure sustainability of Newfoundland and Labrador’s forest resources.
Storing Your Firewood
- Many people in NL buy their wood in the spring to ensure it’s ready for use in the fall.
- We recommend that you not leave your wood directly on the ground for more than a few days. Many people stack their firewood on wood pallets.
- Limit your stacks to 4 feet in height (to ensure stacks do not tip).
- Your firewood storage area should be very well vented. We recommend outdoor storage during the summer months. During the fall and winter months, it’s best to move your wood to a location protected from wind and rain.
Burning Your Wood
- Bring only small amounts of wood indoors at a time.
- Birch produces higher heat, due to its higher density. Many people here mix birch and spruce when burning.
- Wood must be properly seasoned before burning. Pick up a moisture meter to ensure your wood moisture content is less than 25% (ideally, it should be less than 20%). Wet wood can cause build up of creosote in your chimney — not good.
- Have your woodstove/fireplace insert and chimney regularly inspected by a qualified technician. We can provide you with contact information for a recommended WETT Certified technician – just ask.
